AI - What Is It and Do I Need to Understand it to Use It

AI – What Is It, and Do I Need to Understand It to Use It?
At its most basic level, artificial intelligence (AI) is math.
AI takes things like data, images, music, and text and breaks them down into very small pieces of information. It then assigns probabilities to how those pieces relate to one another and uses math to predict likely outcomes based on patterns it has learned.
For most people, that explanation is already far more complicated than necessary—and that’s okay. We don’t need to fully understand how AI works internally in order to use it effectively.
A helpful way to think about AI is through a familiar analogy: driving a car.
Most of us drive cars every day. Not everyone understands the details of internal combustion engines, onboard computers, or the laws of physics involved in propulsion and braking. Yet we can still safely drive to work because we understand the rules of the road.
AI is much the same.
You don’t need to understand every technical detail about neural networks, probabilities, or training data. What does matter is understanding the basic rules that allow you to use AI safely, responsibly, and effectively.

The “Rules of the Road” for AI
When driving, we follow rules such as:
• Speed limits
• Stop signs and traffic lights
• Using turn signals
These rules don’t teach us how the engine works—they tell us how to behave so we can avoid accidents and keep everyone safe.
AI has its own “rules of the road,” including things like:
• Knowing what information should not be shared with AI
• Recognizing that AI can make mistakes or provide incomplete answers and knowing when to verify the output
• Using AI in ways that align with company policies and ethical standards
These rules help prevent data leaks, bad decisions, and misuse, just like traffic rules help prevent wrecks.

Maintaining AI, Just Like a Car
Driving safely isn’t just about following rules. Cars also require ongoing maintenance:
• Filling up with gas
• Changing the oil
• Keeping the vehicle in good working order
Ignoring maintenance can leave you stranded on the side of the road.
Using AI responsibly also requires ongoing “maintenance,” such as:
• Keeping your computer and software secure and up to date
• Using only approved, secure, and paid AI tools for business or sensitive work
• Staying informed as AI tools and policies evolve
Paying attention to these practices helps ensure a safe, effective AI experience—and reduces the risk of security issues or compliance problems.

The Bottom Line
You don’t need to be an AI expert to use AI—just like you don’t need to be a mechanic to drive a car.
What you do need is:
• A basic understanding of how to interact with AI
• Awareness of the “rules of the road”
• Good habits that keep your systems—and your data—safe
With those in place, AI can be a powerful and practical tool that helps you get where you need to go.
